How are you a member of the UNCG LIS family?

I am pursuing a MLS, concentrating in technology and expertise in an academic setting. I am a member of LISSA, the LIS student association and actively try to socialize and get to know both the faculty (including my professors and advisor) and my fellow students within the program. I am a student representative on the technology committee within the LIS department and I am a representative for the LIS department within the Graduate Student Association.

Tell us about the accomplishments you are most proud of in terms of your academic, professional accomplishments, etc. (brag points for us to use in other words)

I am proud of receiving a departmental scholarship for the 2007-2008 year. I am proud of being awarded funding through the 2007-2008 State LSTA Development Program to attend the NCLA 2007 conference.

I am proud of being selected as a departmental representative for the Graduate Student Association.

I am proud of receiving a Graduate Assistantship through the College Foundation of North Carolina.

I am proud of being selected to present in both the ’06 undergraduate English conference at Virginia Tech and in the 2nd Annual Tusculum College Undergraduate Conference on Literature & Creative Writing.

I am proud of working as a Technical Services Student Assistant for two years at the Virginia Tech Newman Library developing my Microsoft Excel skills and online library research skills.

Give us a brief bio of yourself including your educational and professional background.

I was home educated K-12 and was admitted to Virginia Tech at age 16 where I studied for 4 years and graduated cum laude from VT with a English degree in Creative Writing. I worked as a Legal Assistant at a Private Law Firm in Blacksburg, VA for a year before moving to Greensboro and starting the UNCG Library & Information Science program at age 21.

Do you have a favorite saying or motto you live by? If not, please give us a concise one or two sentence blurb.

“Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.” ~Mary Kay Ash

What role does your education and/or professional position play in applying library and information studies for the benefit of others and society in general?

Experience and education make up a huge part of my bank of resources with which I relate and respond to people. Both the program at UNCG and the atmosphere within the department have had a tremendous impact on my knowledge of Library Science and really opened my mind on a day-to-day level as to how much information and resources are accessible for problem solving—both on a personal global scale. I give the people at UNCG (in the LIS department) lots of credit for motivating and encouraging me to use these skills to get the word out!

Favorite food and drink:

Coffee (it’s the magic in my life).
Homemade Chicken Pot Pie

Favorite song or musical group:

The Magic Numbers—“Take a Chance”

Favorite movie or television show:

Gladiator & Pride & Prejudice

One person you would choose to be marooned on a desert island with....

Angus MacGyver (I’d be off in no time)

Anything else you would like to say to the rest of the UNCG LIS community on our Web site?

There are a lot of “life lessons” that can’t be found on the syllabus—they’re in between the lines and happen subtly from day to day. Thanks for being my teachers! You all deserve PhDs.
