How are you a member of the UNCG LIS family?

I am currently enrolled as a part-time MLIS student and hoping to graduate in Spring 2009.

Tell us about the accomplishments you are most proud of in terms of your academic, professional accomplishments, etc. (brag points for us to use in other words)

As an undergraduate at Mars Hill College I made Dean’s List from December 1999 to May 2002, I was a Who’s Who Among Students of American Colleges and Universities May 2002, and worked on the background research to nominate Mars Hill College to the National Register of Historic Places. As a graduate at Western Carolina University I was inducted to the Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society (NC Lambda chapter).

Give us a brief bio of yourself including your educational and professional background.

: I received my B.A. in History from Mars Hill College in 2002 and received my M.A. in American History with a focus on Public History from Western Carolina University in 2004. I currently work as a library specialist in an academic library and am an active member of both NCLA and ALA.

Do you have a favorite saying or motto you live by? If not, please give us a concise one or two sentence blurb.

: I’m an optimist so I really think that I try to see the good or benefits in everything life throws at me. To quote Lib. Admin. And Management, “Don’t be a duck.”—I know it may sound cheesy but it really does say it all.

What role does your education and/or professional position play in applying library and information studies for the benefit of others and society in general?

I think that library and information studies applies greatly to society and the cultural context in which we live. Its not just about organizing or cataloging books; its about identifying and adapting to the ever-changing information needs and information-seeking patterns of each emerging generation. When we stop seeing the need to change and adapt, we lose sight of how library and information science is a people-based, community-service oriented profession.

Favorite food and drink:

favorite food is Greek and favorite drink is Shirley Temples

Favorite song or musical group:

favorite musical group is Guster.

Favorite movie or television show:

favorite movie is Gone with the Wind and t.v. show is I Love Lucy.

One person you would choose to be marooned on a desert island with....

one of my ancestors who worked as an indentured servant in the 1700s.

Anything else you would like to say to the rest of the UNCG LIS community on our Web site?

I came into this program with the mindset of “get the degree to get the job” but after the Foundations course opened my eyes and opened my mind to possibilities of Library and Information Science, I now want the degree to want the career and I hope I can become a positive impact on our information society and the culture of librarianship in general.
