How are you a member of the UNCG LIS family?
I am on the school media track and this is my second semester in the program. I am in the Charlotte cohort.
Tell us about the accomplishments you are most proud of in terms of your academic, professional accomplishments, etc. (brag points for us to use in other words)
I am one of 69 LIS students nationally named as a Spectrum Scholar by the American Library Association (ALA) in 2006 and received a scholarship to fund my education. Additionally, I will be going to the ALA Conference in June and participating in a three-day leadership institute as part of the scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist minority students, who have potential for future leadership in the field, to attend graduate school.

Give us a brief bio of yourself including your educational and professional background.
I was born in Venezuela to parents who emigrated from China to there. When I was seven years old, my family immigrated to Camden, South Carolina, where I grew up. I attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumers Science (home economics) with a concentration in Early Intervention. It was at Winthrop when I became interested in working for a library. I worked at Ida Jane Dacus Library as a Student Library Assistant and was promoted to Evening/Weekend Supervisor my senior year. After college, I took a job as a Library Assistant at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenberg County, where I have been working for almost three years. I wanted to work in the education field and in libraries so I decided to combine these two areas and attend graduate school at UNCG to become a school media specialist.
Do you have a favorite saying or motto you live by? If not, please give us a concise one or two sentence blurb.
My favorite quote came from one of my favorite authors, Laura Ingalls Wilder: “…the real things haven’t changed; they can never change. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures and be cheerful when things go wrong.”
What role does your education and/or professional position play in applying library and information studies for the benefit of others and society in general?
I hope to make a difference in the lives of my future students. I want to promote reading and show students that reading is enjoyable. I will use my background in Education and collaborate with classroom teachers to create integrated lesson plans to teach information skills.
