LIS students from UNCG recently had the opportunity to present at one of the field’s major conferences.
Ryan Combs, Dr. Anthony Chow, Kathelene Smith, and LIS Department Head Dr. Lee Shiflett
UNCG LIS students Kathelene Smith and Ryan Combs, along with UNCG LIS faculty member Dr. Anthony Chow, presented “Information Architecture, Marketing, and Usability and the design of the STARS Alliance Web portal” at the 2008 ALISE Conference in Philadelphia, PA from January 8-11. The research project, on which they collaborated with Columbia University student Blair Darnell, gave the students the opportunity to conduct first-hand research evaluate the website for STARS (Students & Technology in Academia, Research & Service).
When asked how she felt she benefited from the experience, Kathelene Smith said: “Presenting at the ALISE conference was really an amazing experience. It was not only rewarding to see the efforts of our team's research in that format, but it was great to have the opportunity to share information about STARS Alliance with experts in the field. Overall, collaborating with Dr. Chow on the STARS Web site has given me the chance to incorporate theory into practice at every turn.”
ALISE, the Association for Library and Information Science Education, is a non-profit organization that aims to serve the intellectual needs of the faculty in the nation’s library and information science graduate programs.
