State-Approved Licensure Programs:

School Library Media Coordinator (076)

In North Carolina, the school's library media coordinator may be identified by a variety of titles, such as librarian, library teacher, or media specialist. The official title for certification purposes is school library media coordinator, and this position is considered a teaching certification.

LICENSURE: The Masters of Library Science degree is the entry-level requirement for all North Carolina School Library Media Coordinators. Additionally, School Library Media Coordinators are licensed as teachers.

School Media Supervisor (078)

The media director/supervisor is a system-level media professional who may be identified as Director of Library Media Services, Director of Media and Technology, Coordinator of Library Media Services, or Library Supervisor. Competencies are required in the areas of administration, supervision/management, and curriculum development for this certification area.

LICENSURE: Director/Supervisor (Masters level) certification is required for service as Director of Media Services in a school system. Certification is based on eligibility to hold the Media Coordinator (076) certificate plus 12 graduate semester hours of credit in administration, curriculum development, and supervision and three years of acceptable experience as a Media Coordinator.

Instructional Technology Specialist - Computers (077)

This 37 hour concentration is designed for teachers and other candidates who wish to focus their studies on instructional technology as it relates to library and information studies. The Instructional Technology Specialist Computers (077) licensure is attached to this concentration.

Students may apply for admission through the Graduate School at UNCG ( http://www.uncg.edu/grs ) through LIS with a concentration in Instructional Technology. Prior to applying, it is recommended that you contact the Instructional Technology Concentration Coordinator, Dr. Billy Kealy at wakealy@uncg.edu for advisement regarding the IT concentration.

Students who already hold a MLIS need to consult with an advisor or the ITC Coordinator Billy Kealy at wakealy@uncg.edu in order to develop a plan of study leading to the 077 licensure. Students already holding the MLIS degree may apply to the program as a licensure only student and complete the ITC requirements in order to qualify for the NCDPI 077 license.

PRAXIS Examination:

School library media licensure candidates may be required to present passing scores on the PRAXIS/NTE specialty area exam in addition to meeting degree requirements.
