The H.W. Wilson Scholarship was established in 1983 by a grant from the H.W. Wilson Foundation. Since 1957 the Foundation has provided grants every 5-6 years to each of the ALA-accredited library schools in the United States and Canada.
These scholarships are to be used to attract to the profession potentially capable librarians who would not otherwise be able to choose this career. The program provides that each school may award its grant in accordance with its own scholarship criteria and may divide the total sum as it wishes.
The funds are deposited into the account established for this Scholarship through the Development and University Relations Office. The LIS Department faculty selects the recipient(s) and notifies the Graduate Dean who sends notification to the recipient(s) and the Student Financial Aid Office.
PROCEDURES
Each spring semester the Admissions Committee of the Department of Library and Information Studies meets to select students who meet the majority of the following criteria:
Once the most qualified student is selected, the Chair of the Department contacts the student to see whether or not the student will accept the scholarship. If the student does plan to accept the scholarship, the Department submits the recommendation to the Dean of the Graduate School, who notifies in writing the student in writing, with a copy to the Office of Financial Aid.
