LLC Departmental Scholarships

Each semester LLC awards substantial scholarships to majors and graduate students in French and Spanish, and to majors and minors in German. We rely on applications, faculty recommendations, and records of student achievement to ensure comprehensive coverage. The departmental scholarships are awarded on the basis of achievement and are as follows:

LLC (All languages)

Ruth P. Heinemann Award

This is the RPH LLC Foreign Travel Study Scholarship Fund. This Award provides financial support to study abroad.

Eligibility: LLC graduate and undergraduate students with financial need.

Preference given to:

  • Applicants studying Spanish
  • Applicants seeking K-12 Licensure or intending to teach
  • Applicants with high GPA
  • Applicants who have not previously lived or studied in foreign countries

Applicants who do not meet these criteria may also apply for the Award if funds are available.

Amount of award: $500-$2000 annually (Office of Financial Aid determines amount)

Application checklist

  • Fill out on-line application letter including a short narrative description of your intended study abroad program. Submit letter on-line when submitting application. Include:
  • Applicants seeking K-12 Licensure or intending to teach
  • Estimated budget including other grants you may have received or applied for
  • UNCG transcript with overall GPA and program of study GPA

German Awards

Anne F. Baecker Award

This is a scholarship to study abroad in German speaking countries.

Eligibility: The Anne F. Baecker Award program is competitive and not based on financial need. The eligibility criteria include:

  • American citizenship or resident alien
  • In-state or out-of-state German Majors and Minors at UNCG, who will not be graduating during the period of award
  • German Majors who are entering the teaching profession or going to German Studies Graduate School many constitute exceptions
  • Completion of German 204 or course above GER 204
  • Minimum GPA 2.5. Minimum of 3.0 in German

Preference will be given to:

  • Applications with higher grade point average
  • Applicants with excellent class attendance records
  • Applicants who have not previously lived or studied in German-speaking countries
  • Applicants who enroll in full-semester or full-year study abroad programs

Post-Award activities and stipulations:

  • Returning students will participate in the "Global Village", or give at least one German class and seminar presentation about their projects abroad

Amount of Award: $250 - $700 annually

  • Lebenslauf (200-word autobiographical sketch) written in German
  • Short narrative description of your intended study abroad program
  • Estimated budget, including airfare, tuition, fees, and other expenses
  • UNCG transcript with overall GPA, and German GPA

French and Spanish

Eligibility: Declared majors must have minimally a 3.5 GPA to quality for these awards.

The Friends of Romance Languages Scholarship:

Awarded occasionally to students majoring in a Romance Language

The Evelyn W. Simpson Scholarship:

Awarded to graduate or undergraduate students majoring in a Romance Language

The Mary Eliza Spicer Scholarship:

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to undergraduate students majoring in Romance Languages

The Winfield Barney Scholarship:

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to undergraduate or graduate students majoring in French and/or Spanish

The Meta Miller - Elizabeth Barineau Scholarship:

Awarded to rising junior or senior French majors, and incoming or continuing graduate students in French, on the basis of superior work in French studies. Freshman or sophomore French majors who have excelled in French 204 may also be considered. May also be awarded to graduate or undergraduate majors in Spanish on the basis of academic achievement.

The Outstanding Major Award:

Awarded in French and Spanish on the basis of overall performance and achievements

French

The René Hardré Scholarship:

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to undergraduate or graduate students majoring in French

The Jean-Paul Koenig - Kathleen Koestler Scholarship for Study Abroad:

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to French majors for Study Abroad in France. Priority given to students enrolled in departmental programs.

Spanish

The Augustine LaRochelle Scholarship:

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Spanish

The Ramiro Lagos Scholarship for Study Abroad:

Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to Spanish majors for Study Abroad in Spain. Priority given to students enrolled in departmental programs.
