Personal Statement

Carola Dwyer was born and raised in rural Northern Germany; the fifth child of a family that experienced life in both East and West Germany before this division officially ended in 1990. After her graduation from the German Gymnasium and while participating in an exchange work program at Epcot Center, FL, she decided that one day she would return to the US, a goal she realized ten years later. In Germany, Carola obtained a degree in Economics & Human Resource Management from the University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule) Rheinland-Pfalz in Mainz, which led her to San Diego, CA. Here, she began her graduate studies with a Master’s in English from San Diego State University. Her graduate education continued in the Midwest with a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she is in the very last stages of her dissertation on the Grotesque Medieval Woman in German, English, and French Narratives.

Although Carola’s path reflects her various interests, her love for literature and languages is the predominant strain in her professional life. It allowed her to gain ten years of teaching experience at the college level before arriving at UNCG in fall 2012. By profession and passion a medievalist, Carola develops and currently teaches courses that reflect her research interest in this area, such as medieval romances. She is currently developing a web-based course on German Mythology and now ventures into new subjects that connect topics in language with science and technology.

Since August 2012, Carola is also UNCG’s first Faculty-in-Residence. She lives on the UNCG campus’s newly renovated QUAD. Carola considers her function as a link between teaching and life on campus and feels very close to the student community. Her position as FIR allows her to organize a variety of events that are directly and indirectly related to her work as a German lecturer and as a member of LLC.
