Personal Statement

Elliott Gougeon is originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he also received a B.A. from the University of Scranton with a major in German and a minor in French. After his undergraduate studies, he spent a year teaching English in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He continued his German studies through the Ph.D. level at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a concentration in linguistics and minor concentrations in Medieval German literature and Danish. His research interests include Germanic historical syntax and morphology, socio-historical linguistics, and the architecture of the 3rd Reich and the German Democratic Republic. He is very committed to student and community outreach through extracurricular German cultural offerings and seeks to foster student engagement outside the classroom when possible.
