Research/ Teaching Interests

I have taught classes on Japanese literature, film, manga, and language while a grad student at the University of Oregon and am currently teaching both beginning and advanced Japanese at UNCG. I am passionate about teaching and endeavor to share my life long love for Japan and Japanese culture with my students. I have high expectations for my students and encourage them to have high expectations for themselves. I am committed to fostering one-on-one relationships with students, discovering their personal interests and strengths, learning from them, and guiding them on the path to their futures. I oversee coffee gatherings on Fridays for beginning and advanced students of Japanese to practice conversation and talk about Japanese culture, as well as biweekly screenings of contemporary Japanese cinema.

Recently I defended my doctoral dissertation, "Sea change: Japan's New Wave of Female Filmmakers;" a work on female directors, female audiences, and gendered exhibition spaces in Japan.
