Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Advanced Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultural Studies

Admission Requirements

Applicants seeking admission to the graduate certificate program must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized accredited college or university and must have obtained satisfactory undergraduate academic standing: “B” average (3.0 GPA) or better in the undergraduate major and in any upper-level coursework in Spanish.  For admission, a minimum of “intermediate high” proficiency in Spanish must be demonstrated by appropriate coursework, by a personal interview with the faculty, or by an officially recognized testing procedure such as that of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).  All applicants are required to submit the following to The Graduate School:

  1. a completed application form
  2. a nonrefundable application fee
  3. two official transcripts of academic records from every college and university previously attended
  4. three letters of recommendation
  5. satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), taken within  the last five years

All applicants are required to submit the following to the Director of Graduate Study in Spanish at the Department of Romance Languages:

  1. a 500-word essay in Spanish describing the applicant’s professional goals and motivation for pursuing graduate work in the certificate
  2. a 3- to 5-minute unscripted tape in Spanish in which the applicant introduces her/himself and describes her/his academic or equivalent preparation to pursue advanced proficiency in Spanish
  3. a 5- to 10-page sample of professional or academic analytical writing in English or Spanish
