Deutsch ist Handy! German Day 2013

The German Program with the support of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, hosted the 13th annual German Day on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Over 550 German students from 22 schools in North Carolina participated in the many fun competitions and events. German Day's most popular event was Karaoke to German songs from every music genre, with Skits a close second. Students also spelled, conjugated, recited poetry, sang, created art, and answered culture questions to this year's theme: Deutsch ist Handy! (German is practical or cell phone since Germans have adopted the English-sounding word Handy for cell phone!) The students and faculty of UNCG’s German Program organized the all-day event that also included campus tours, chat sessions, and the Harlem Shake. At the end of the day, the Awards Ceremony convinced us all that not only: Deutsch ist Handy! but also Deutsch macht Spaß! German is fun!

Generous support provided by the Kohler Fund allowed us to host a luncheon for teachers, judges, and chaperones who volunteered their time in order to make this event possible. Associate Provost for International Affairs, Dr. Penelope Pynes, Dr. Jerry Pubantz, Dean of the Lloyd International Honors College, and Ms. Laura Pipe, Director of Learning Communities greeted our guests and highlighted initiatives that contribute to UNCG’s global orientation.

The German Program is particularly pleased that the event returned to our campus where it was hosted for the first time in 2001 by Dr. Pynes and other faculty of the German Program. Many thanks to our colleagues and friends from across campus and the Triad who served as judges for the competitions: Gabriele Verhoeven (Wiley International Elementary), Wendy Burgbacher (Cary Academy), David Limburg (Guilford College), William Singley (German major, Guilford College), Carola Dwyer (UNCG), Scott Windham (Elon Univ.), Kayla Cavenaugh (Art History/German major, UNCG), Calvin Jones, Christa Jones, Janet Harris, Ulrike Zimmermann, Jillian Haeseler (Greensboro College), Elizabeth Schreiber-Byers (UNC-Ch), Molly Knight (WFU), Andreas Lixl (UNCG), Kurt Niedenzu, Maggie Majors (WFU), Margit Lanze (Cary Academy), Steffen Kaupp (UNC-CH/Duke), Claire Scott (UNC-CH/Duke), Alyssa Howards (WFU), Corey Johnson (UNCG), Marilyn Metzler, Brooke Kreitinger (UNCG) & Olav Rueppel (UNCG). Vielen Dank!
