The Department of Mathematics and Statistics consists of two divisions: Mathematics Division, and Statistics Division, and a Statistical Consulting Center. Its faculty is active in research. The department has more than 300 students majoring in the following undergraduate degree and graduate degree programs.

The department also offers a Mathematics minor for underegraduate students, and a Statistics minor for graduate students.

Mathematics and Statistics has defined a mission statement with clear goals. The department follows this mission statement to provide all three of the University's major functions - teaching, research and service.
In the summer of 2006 the Mathematical Sciences Department split into two different departments.
