How to Apply to the Graduate Program

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UNCG admits students to PhD in Computational Mathematics, MA in Mathematics, and MS in Applied Statistics.

The deadline to submit application for admission to MA or PhD programs with assistantship for Fall 2024 is March 15, 2024.  Students interested in admission to Master’s or PhD programs may continue to apply until July 1, 2024. We review application for admission on a rolling basis once they are complete.  Initial decision for assistantship is usually made by March 20.

Application materials must be completed through this application portal. An incomplete application

cannot be reviewed for admission. A complete application requires all of the following:

  • The application fee ($65 USD payable by credit card)
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation.  These letters should comment about your academic preparation and potential to succeed in the graduate program that you are applying.  Letters from non-academic references should be avoided unless it can speak about your preparedness for the graduate school as a result of the training ­received under this individual.
  • Transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions you attended, including any exchange student study.
  • Personal Statement.  This document allows you to introduce yourself to the Graduate Studies Committee beyond what can be inferred by looking at transcripts and letters of recommendation. You may describe motivation to pursue graduate program, any research experience(s) you have had, indicate your area of interest (if any), your career goals and how our graduate program fits with those goals. You may also use this document to explain any perceived weakness in your application.
  • Non-native speakers of English with international transcripts, regardless of U.S. citizenship, must validate proficiency in the English language. Applicants may submit a satisfactory score on a language proficiency test. If the TOEFL is the chosen test, the minimum required score depends on the form of the exam taken (internet based – 79, or paper based – 550). A score of at least 6.5 is required on the IELTS.
