Math Help Center

The Math Help Center provides free tutoring to UNCG students enrolled in 100-299 level MAT and STA courses offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.  The Math Help Center offers in-person tutoring and virtual tutoring.  The in-person drop-in tutoring is in Curry 210.  Online students have access to virtual tutoring through Microsoft Teams.  Please check out the availability for tutoring by going to go.uncg.edu/trac.  If you have any questions about the Math Help Center, you can email the Director of the Math Help Center, Matt Jester, at mwjester@uncg.edu.  If you have any technical issues with TracCloud (go.uncg.edu/trac), please email tutortrac-sysadmins-l@uncg.edu with as much detail as you can provide.

Here are some FAQ regarding the Math Help Center:

– What can a tutor help me with?

Tutors can clarify course concepts and teach strategies to more effectively learn, study, and solve academic problems in specific courses. They can’t help with graded work before it is graded, but they are still happy to help you understand the concepts in that work.

– What are tutoring appointments like?

Regardless if you utilize drop-in tutoring or one-on-one appointment based tutoring, your tutor will ask what you want to work on and explain how they can help. Then you’ll get to work. Be ready to participate! As peers, tutors aren’t here to lecture or judge. They offer fresh perspectives and activities to help you learn course concepts and strategies.

– When is the Math Help Center open?

We are open the following hours every week, unless classes are canceled due to inclement weather or an observed holiday.

  • Mondays:  10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Tuesdays:  10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Wednesdays:  10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Thursdays:  10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Fridays:  10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

– How many times can a student attend drop-in tutoring?

As many times as they want, given there is space.  Each drop-in tutor can assist three students at a time.  The space in the Math Help Center is limited.

– What happens if all the tutors are busy with three students when I arrive at the Math Help Center?

You are more than welcome to wait for a tutor to have a spot to open up.  Use the kiosk to sign in to the math help center, then sit in our waiting area.  As soon as a seat opens up, the tutor or desk assistant will call your name and get you set up.  While you wait you can prepare questions and concepts that you need assistance with.

– How many times can a student utilize one-on-one appointments?

A student can utilize three (1 hr each) one-on-one appointments per week.  Note that online tutoring is considered one-on-one appointments.

– Will tutoring help me get an A in my classes?

Every student has different situations and goals, which means there is no guaranteed outcome for tutoring. Although, if you are 100% committed to developing your academic skills in a course, you will:

Think about your current learning strategies and habits

Understand what changes you can make to improve your grades

Have specific strategies to use now and in your future classes

Become a more efficient learner by studying smarter, not just harder
