The 11th Annual UNCG Regional Mathematics and Statistics Conference

The Department hosted the 11th annual UNCG RMSC Conference on Nov 7, 2015.

The conference was attended by a record number of 169 participants (128 students: 2 high-school, 88 undergraduate, 38 graduate students, and 41 faculty).

The conference was very diverse as UNCG helps lead national efforts to increase opportunities for female and minority students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Over 50% (68 out of 128 students and 85 out of 169 total) participants were female and nearly 20% (25 out of 128 students) were racial minorities. 35 different institutions were represented at the conference, including universities from NC, SC, VA but also from Texas, Washington, Puerto-Rico. The institutions with largest attendance were UNCG (37), Elon (20), Winthrop University (19), Bennett College (17) and UNCW (15).

The plenary lectures were delivered by Dr. Laura Taalman, professor of mathematics at James Madison University and Dr. Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan, professor of statistics at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.

The students delivered a total of 49 presentations (27 by undergraduate students and 22 by graduate students).

Funding from the National Science Foundation provided travel support for several students to participate in the conference. Other sponsors of the conference were: The Office of the Provost, The Office of Research and Economic Development, The College of Arts & Sciences and the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.

Please join me in congratulating Jan (Rychtar) and his faculty team, including Maya (Chhetri) and Sat (Gupta), for organizing yet another successful UNCG RMSC Conference. Please also join me in thanking Haley (Childers), Alyssa (Wharton), Joe (Diodato), Richard (Cheek), Walker (Weigel) and Byungjae (Son) for their time and excellent support with the organization of this event.
