Eligible applicants to the eight-week Algorithmic Combinatorics on Words REU are undergraduate students at the sophomore, junior, and senior levels. Senior applicants should not be Spring 2008 graduates. NSF support through this REU project is open only to undergraduate students who are, at the time of application, citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.

Support is intended for highly motivated students whose undergraduate study is in Mathematics and/or Computer Science. The ideal candidate for this project would have taken a wide variety of upper-level mathematics and/or computer science courses including some of the following: Discrete Mathematics, Combinatorics, Algorithms, Theoretical Computer Science, and Programming. A distinguished academic record and indication of research interest or potential are essential.

1. A written description of all courses taken in mathematics and computer science. Include current courses as well as courses planned for the upcoming Fall semester. For each course, give a brief description and list the textbook used.
   
   
2. A personal statement of no more than 300 words outlining your interest in the REU program at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
   
   
3. A second personal statement of no more than 300 words outlining your intended career objectives and education aspirations.
   
   
4. An unofficial copy of your academic transcript.
   
   
5. Two letters of recommendation.

All application materials will have to be submitted via postal mail, fax, or e-mail with the exception of the academic transcript which must be submitted via postal mail. Postal mail applications must be postmarked by the application deadline. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all materials are received. An incomplete application will be at a disadvantage in the competition and may not be evaluated.

Student participants will be selected based on merit after a nationwide recruitment from a broad range of colleges and universities. Underrepresented groups including minorities, women, and students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Admission will be competitive and based on motivation, strength of the academic record, and letters of recommendation. Students admitted to this program will be given a stipend of $5,000. There will also be allowances for travel depending on distance from Greensboro, campus housing, and participation in a national/international meeting or conference.

This will be an intense program, and students should plan not to engage in other activities during its duration.
