Plenary Lecture - An Optimal Sandwich

Abstract: Beam, that is. We consider a model of an elastic structure known as a sandwich beam, which consists of a compliant middle layer sandwiched between two much stiffer outer layers. Mechanical energy (vibrations) in the structure can be dissipated by damping in the middle layer. We will review the basic model of a damped harmonic oscillator which you often study in your differential equations course, and then see how some ideas extend to the sandwich structure. The optimization problem is - how should the beam be designed to best suppress vibrations in the structure?
