The suggested timeline for completion of the PhD degree is as follows:

- A PhD student's first priority should be passing three qualifying exams. Students should take
courses in the first two years that lead to qualifying exams.
- Since all students are required to pass either the Algebra or the Analysis qualifying exam, these courses should be given a priority in the first year.
- Many courses are offered on a biennial basis. Plan accordingly. Students should usually not enroll in 500-level courses after the first two years. A maximum of 10 hours of 500-level credit can be applied to the PhD.
- After passing three exams, finding a dissertation advisor becomes the number one priority.
- All students are expected to attend department talks, events and colloquia. There is no better way to learn about faculty research than to interact with them.
