Assistantships and Fellowships

Graduate Assistantships

The majority of the financial aid that the School of Music offers to graduate students is through Graduate Assistantships. Graduate Assistants receive competitive stipends and many, but not all, receive tuition waivers. There are in-state tuition waivers and out-of-state differential waivers. The latter only covers the difference between in- and out-of-state tuition. An in-state student can receive an in-state tuition waiver, covering all tuition. An out-of-state student can receive both in- and out-of-state tuition waivers, covering all tuition, or can receive just an out-of-state waiver, necessitating that the student pay the remaining in-state tuition. Additional University fees are not covered by tuition waivers.

Each Graduate Assistant has a work assignment of 20 hours per week. The assignments are directly related to the School of Music's teaching, research, service, and administrative operations. Some of the possible assignments are private or classroom teaching and assisting a professor. The Associate Dean makes the assignments in consultation with the faculty and in keeping with the student's skills and interests. Some of the assignments may involve additional interviews. The School of Music reserves the right to change a student's assignment at any time.

The deadline for graduate assistantship consideration is February 28, 2009. An on-campus audition or interview is required for all Graduate Assistant applicants.

Fellowships

The UNCG Graduate School offers a limited number of fellowships to students with high GPAs and GRE scores. These are campus-wide awards and are quite competitive. Each year, a small number of music students usually receive the largest awards, which are $18,000 per academic year plus tuition waivers. There is no work assignment for Fellowships as there is for Graduate Assistantships.

The deadline for fellowship consideration is usually in late February. For additional information and a nomination form, please contact Dr. William P. Carroll no later than February 1. Interested students must be fully admitted to UNCG and have completed the application and audition process by February 28. To have the best chance of receiving a fellowship, the graduate application and audition should be completed by February 1. The absolute deadline for fellowship consideration is February 28.

Apprenticeships and Internships

Apprenticeships and internships with local arts organizations are occasionally available to UNCG students. In recent years, some of these have included performing and administrative positions with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, teaching positions in local music schools, and office positions with the Eastern Music Festival. Please contact Dr. William P. Carroll to learn about positions that will be available for the academic school year.
