Application/Interview Instructions
- Submit a written analytical paper on a musical topic. This must be received at least three weeks in advance of the audition/interview. Submit to Dr. William P. Carroll, Associate Dean.
- Arrange for an audition/interview with the graduate theory faculty. Contact Dr. Irna Priore, Theory Coordinator.
- An interview is required for admission into the Music Theory major. During the interview, the applicant will be asked to demonstrate proficiency in sight-singing, dictation, and keyboard performance. The applicant will also take a written exam in the fundamentals in music theory, tonal harmony, and form.
- Applicants should have taken a counterpoint course equivalent to MUS 507-Modal Counterpoint or MUS 508-Tonal Counterpoint with a grade of “C” or better. Students who have not taken such a course may fulfill this requirement with elective hours.
For assistantship consideration, the applicant must meet the deadlines described earlier in this brochure. For applicants not interested in applying for an assistantship, it is highly recommended that The Graduate School application and School of Music interview be completed by April 1. |
