All prospective music graduate students must submit a formal application to The Graduate School.  Applications may be submitted online at www.uncg.edu/grs or you can contact the Graduate School directly.

Full admission to The School of Music is a two-step process involving:

  1. Successful audition/interview/evaluation by The School of Music
  2. Application and admission to The University by The Graduate School

All applicants must have obtained the following:

  1. A bachelor’s degree (and master’s degree for some doctoral applicants) from a recognized, accredited college or university
  2. Satisfactory academic standing with a “B” (3.0 GPA) average or better
  3. Satisfactory scores on a qualifying examination.  Test scores are valid for five years
    Ph.D., D.M.A., and M.M. in performance, theory, and composition — Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
    M.M. in music education — PRAXIS II (or other nationally recognized teaching exam) - Must also submit evidence of teaching licensure to The School of Music

The application to The Graduate School includes:
Submit all of the items below to The Graduate School.  Sending these items to The School of Music may delay processing of your graduate application.

  1. A completed application
  2. Two official transcripts of the student’s academic records from every college and university previously attended (even if the courses from one school appear on the transcript of another)
  3. Three recommendations from former professors, employers, or persons well acquainted with the student’s academic potential
  4. Qualifying examination scores (#3 above)
  5. A non-refundable $45.00 application fee.

Where a degree was earned, the official transcript must indicate the name of the degree and the date awarded.  All credentials must be in English.

Nonresident aliens must provide certification of financial support. A computer based TOEFL score of 213 (paper based score of 550) is required unless the applicant is a citizen of a country, or graduate of a university, where English is the official language. IELTS scores (minimum 6.5) may also be submitted.

Graduate Assistantship Deadline

The deadline for Graduate Assistantship (GA) consideration is February 23, 2008. Applicants must audition/interview and have a completed graduate application in The School of Music by this date.
