The School
of Music of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro offers the
following courses to students interested in the study of jazz performance
and history.
MUSIC
103 PRINCIPLES OF JAZZ THEORY (one credit hour)
Establishes
a foundation of knowledge for the study of jazz improvisation and composition,
stressing jazz nomenclature, chord/scale analysis, basic chord substitution,
and voice leading.
MUSIC
214 JAZZ APPRECIATION (three credit hours)
Introductory
course designed to give the student new insights and general knowledge of all
jazz styles. Does not require previous musical training.

321 JAZZ IMPROVISATION I (three credit hours)

322 JAZZ IMPROVISATION II (three credit hours)
The first
semester covers essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills and practice
of integrating them into improvisation. The second semester involves continued
development of knowledge and skills with emphasis on increased fluency and mastery.

The jazz
ensemble and jazz band are large jazz ensembles that rehearse and perform published
music, and music of UNCG students.

396/696 SMALL JAZZ ENSEMBLES (one credit hour)
Several "combos" are
organized each semester to provide the student an opportunity to
study and perform standard jazz literature and original student compositions.
The small
jazz ensembles perform on campus and in local restaurants and clubs. Small jazz
groups receive active training in the studio.

409 JAZZ PEDAGOGY
(three credit
hours)
Principles of
jazz interpretation, improvisation and arranging. Procedures for organizing and
administering jazz programs and for conducting rehearsals. Course includes a
survey of jazz study materials.
MUSIC
423 JAZZ ARRANGING (three credit hours)
Beginning
study of language and techniques employed in arranging music for various
jazz ensembles.

424 JAZZ ARRANGING II (three credit hours)
Advanced
study of techniques and disciplines employed in arranging for jazz ensembles
MUSIC
460 HISTORY OF JAZZ (three credit hours)
Chronological
survey of jazz music and history. Introduction to standard reference
works and investigation of socio-cultural aspects.
MUSIC
401 JAZZ PIANO SKILLS (one credit hour)
This course is
designed to teach students basic piano chord accompanying of jazz standards,
including rooted and rootless voicings.
MUSIC 304
JAZZ EAR TRAINING (one credit hour)
This course will
prepare the student to recognize jazz constructs by ear, and will teach the skills
to transcribe improvised jazz solos.
