Fifth
Annual UNCG
New Music Festival
October 28-30, 2008 // Greensboro, NC
Unimaginable Music & Unruly Artists
The Fifth Annual UNCG New Music Festival will be especially linked to the work of unconventional artists whose trademark is their unique approach to their art.The resident ensemble will be the percussion and flute duo DUE EAST, which since 2001 has been pushing the boundaries of possibility with their unusual instrumental pairing and their wide-ranging stylistic eclecticism. Due East’s palette extends from multi-media and technology-driven works to sonic experiences that call for rare world music instruments in combination with folksong-like vocals and narratives.
Guest composers will include composer off-beat vocalist Ken Ueno (Winner of the 06-07 Rome Prize), whose wide range of innovative works have been thrilling audiences around the world; iconic poet, sound-text and visual artist Michael Basinski, who engages in mesmerizing transformations of language; instrumentalist, composer, performer and writer Eugene Chadbourne; and Nora Ponte, whose work explores the relationships between self and other. The lineup also will included Bob Pritchard’s provocative multimedia celebration of the male human form, vibrant new works by composers John Allemeier, Mark Engebretson, Jeff Heriott, Tohm Judson, Mark Lewis, David Maki, John Morrison, Matthew Planchak, Alejandro Rutty, Carl Schimmel, and video by visual artist Seth Ellis. The all-star cast will feature virtuoso performances by new music superstars Nathan Daughtrey, Lorena Guillén, Fabián López, Steve Stusek and Inara Zandmane.
