Vienna Honors Professor David Nelson
Glückwünsche (congratulations) to David Nelson, Professor of Music Theory at the School of Music and recipient of Vienna’s Decoration of Merit in Gold.
The City of Vienna gave Nelson the award (known in German as the Goldenes Verdienstzeichen des Landes Wiens) on March 14th in recognition of his book “Vienna for the Music Lover” and of the many pilgrimages he has made to bring Americans to Vienna’s musical sites. The Goldenes Verdienstzeichen is one of the highest honors Vienna can give. The award to Nelson is the second highest ever given to an American; the highest went to Leonard Bernstein.
Dr. Ernst Theimer, chief executive officer of the City of Vienna, presented the award in a ceremony in the Green Salon in Vienna’s Rathaus. The cultural attaché from the American Embassy, officials from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and prominent musical museums, representatives of the two publishers of Nelson’s book and 20 UNCG music students attended.
Nelson’s book on Vienna was published in 2006 in English and German; a Chinese translation was just released. He has published articles on the wind music of Mozart, Stravinsky and Messiaen and authored a chapter in the music education monograph "On the Nature of Musical Experience." He has taught in Austria and the Czech Republic, and has led more than 100 students and adults on musical tours of Vienna, Salzburg and Prague.

Opera Theatre Celebrates "La Vida Breve"
“La Vida Breve,” a seldom-performed opera noted for its gypsy-influenced music, flamenco dance rhythms and colorful peasant wedding celebration, will be presented by the School of Music and UNCG Theatre Thursday and Friday, April 10-11, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 13, at 2:00 p.m., at Taylor Theatre on Tate Street.
First performed in 1913, the opera tells the story of a beautiful young gypsy woman named Salud who is passionately in love with Paco, a man who is, unbeknownst to her, engaged to an upper class woman. Salud defiantly confronts Paco about his duplicity before his astonished bride and wedding guests, but Paco denies knowing her. Her heart broken, Salud drops dead at Paco’s feet in a gesture of ultimate contempt for her former lover.
Set against a backdrop of village life in southern Spain, “La Vida Breve” features melancholy Andalusian folk songs and Moorish-tinged soul singing known as cante jondo. The work is regarded as one of the finest examples of 20th century Spanish opera.
Tickets are $15 adults, $12 seniors, students and children; $9 groups of 10 or more and UNCG Alumni Association members; $7 UNCG students. Tickets are available at the UNCG Box Office (336) 334-4849, or http://boxoffice.uncg.edu.
The Dickieson Chamber Music Endowment Presents Cuarteto Latinoamericano
Grammy-nominated Cuarteto Latinoamericano will perform on Friday, May 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the School of Music Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public and will feature works by Franz Joseph Haydn, Astor Piazzolla, Miguel del Aguila, Arturo Marquez and Javier Montiel.
Cuarteto Latinoamericano, formed in 1982, is known worldwide as the leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet. This award-winning ensemble from Mexico consists of the three Bitrán brothers, violinists Saúl and Arón and cellist Alvaro, along with violist Javier Montiel. The Cuarteto has recorded most of the Latin American repertoire for string quartet, and the sixth volume of their Villa-Lobos 17 quartets cycle, recorded for Dorian, was nominated for a Grammy award in 2002 in the field of Best Chamber Music Recording as well as for a Latin Grammy.
The concert is made possible by the George W. Dickieson Chamber Music Endowment, honoring the former UNCG School of Music faculty member who passed away on May 23, 2004. During his 39-year tenure, Dickieson instituted the first graduate degree courses, Chamber Music and Symphonic Literature, which are still in the catalogue today, in addition to teaching violin, conducting and orchestration, organizing a student orchestra called “The Sinfonia,” and coordinating several faculty chamber music ensembles that performed locally and out of state. He also served as head of the violin department and chairman of the conducting division. George founded and was the first president of the NC Chapter of the American String Teachers Association, and was a member and officer of Pi Kappa Lambda, was elected to the Golden Chain Honorary Leadership Society, and was honored by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity for his “significant and outstanding contributions to the cause of music in America.”
His wife, Anna Bell Dickieson, established the endowment in celebration and commemoration of George’s distinguished career, leadership, musicianship, and life.

The ensemble performs repertoire ranging from Baroque to Contemporary periods, and specializes in the music of South America. Tickets are $10 adults, $6 seniors, $4 students and $3 UNCG.
