The Holiday Choral Concert will be held on Sunday, December 7, at 4:00 p.m., and will include performances by the UNCG Chamber Singers, University Chorale, Women's Choir, Men's Glee Club and the Women's Glee Club. The concert, which will be held at First Presbyterian Church on 617 N. Elm Street, is free and open to the public. It showcases traditional and contemporary choral music, some of it accompanied by Greensboro's largest pipe organ.

The Musical Arts Guild (MAG) will host a free holiday reception following the concert for all current MAG members and their guests.

Join us for an intensive week of saxophone repair with Certified Master Technician Melody Choplin. Seating is limited to six participants and registration must be paid in full by January 5th. American Old Time Music Concert
with Alan Jabbour and Ken Perlman
Tuesday, January 20, 2009, 7:30 p.m.
Fiddler Alan Jabbour and banjoist Ken Perlman will present a program of Appalachian tunes, featuring most prominently the music Jabbour learned in the 1960s from his mentor, West Virginia fiddler Henry Reed. Jabbour and Perlman have redefined that great American invention, the fiddle-banjo duet, and brought it to new heights of complexity. Their performances testify to the grace, beauty and power of Appalachian music.

Double Reed Day
Sunday, January 25, 2009, 12:30-6:00 p.m.
Double Reed Day features a day of activities for beginning, intermediate and advanced double reed students. Includes clinics on breathing, tone production, fingerings, reedmaking and adjusting for oboe and bassoon, as well as UNCG student performances, faculty recital and double reed choir. with special guest artist Jon Nakamatsu
Master Classes

One of the most sought-after pianists of his generation, Jon Nakamatsu is a frequent concerto soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and solo recitalist throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Winner of the Gold Medal at the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The residency is made possible by a generous gift made by William H. Heins, Jr.

Annual High School Piano Day
Saturday, February 7, 2009, 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Join the UNCG piano faculty on Saturday, February 7th for an exciting day of piano master classes and recitals. All students will perform at least one of their two submitted works in one of four concurrent master classes given by UNCG piano performance faculty members. Registration is due by January 31st. Holiday Closing

The School of Music Administrative Offices will close at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23rd for the winter break and will reopen with full services on Monday, January 5th. Classes for the Spring 2009 semester will begin Tuesday, January 20th.


News, Awards and Honors

Guy Capuzzo, Associate Professor of Music Theory, will host a celebration for composer Elliott Carter's 100th birthday on December 11, 7:00 p.m., in Collins Lecture Hall (Room 217).

Elizabeth Keathley (Associate Professor of Musicology), Andrew Willis (Professor of Piano, Fortepiano, Harpsichord), Rich Auvil (graduate student in piano performance) have been selected to present papers at the College Music Society International Conference, June 30-July 7, 2009, in Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Paul Stewart, Keyboard Division Chair, presented his Ragtime lecture demonstration at the New York State Music Teachers Association, October 18, at State University of New York, New Paltz. The organization surprised Stewart with a special citation and plaque at the Conference Banquet, honoring him for his outstanding contributions to the musical community as performer, pedagogue and MTNA leader.

Anthony Taylor, Assistant Professor of Clarinet, and wife Samantha DiRosa welcomed baby girl Sylvia Julep in October.

Chris Wright, School of Music Computer Technology Consultant, and wife Janice welcomed baby girl Jillian Nicole in November.
