Greetings from the School of Music!

Celebrate Greensboro's Bicentennial with the School of Music and the Musical Arts Guild
The UNCG Center for Creative Writing in the Arts, the School of Music, and the Musical Arts Guild invite you to join us on Sunday, October 12, 3:30 p.m., in the Recital Hall for a celebration of Greensboro's bicentennial. The concert will highlight UNCG's contributions to music, literature and to the region's cultural life.
The Center for Creative Writing in the Arts commissioned former NC poet laureate Fred Chappell, who helped establish the UNCG MFA program in creative writing, to write a poem in honor of the bicentennial. The poem is being set to music by Eddie Bass, emeritus professor of music, and will be performed by School of Music faculty and students. Poets Carole Weatherford and Sarah Lindsay will also read selections from their work.
A wine and cheese reception will follow the concert. Please note, this event replaces the Musical Arts Guild Membership Open House previously scheduled for Saturday, October 11.

Fourth Annual Charles A. Lynam Vocal Competition Set for October 25-26
Sopranos, mezzos, basses and tenors from around the nation and beyond will vie for honors during the Fourth Annual Charles A. Lynam Vocal Competition on Saturday and Sunday, October 25-26 in the School of Music Recital Hall.
The contest has two divisions: Artist Division (ages 24-40) and Young Artist Division (ages 18-23). In the preliminary round, conducted by CD/tape recordings, judges narrowed applicants to 22 semi-finalists. Semi-finalists will compete on Saturday and then six finalists in each division will compete in the Sunday finals. Close to 200 applications from 32 states, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico were received.
Competition times in the Recital Hall will be: Saturday, semi-finals starting at 11:00 a.m.; Sunday, 1:00 p.m., final round and 7:30 p.m. winner’s recital.
In addition to cash awards, prizes given during the finals include an opportunity to perform during the 2009-10 season with the Greensboro Symphony along with admission and scholarship to the Seagle Music Colony. A quartet of singers will be chosen for a performance tour of China.
NOTION Music, a Greensboro-based company that makes music creation and performance software, is the event’s sponsor.
The competition honors the teaching and performing career of Professor Charles Lynam, who received a UNCG Alumni Teaching Excellence Award and was named Teacher of the Year in the School of Music. Lynam retired from UNCG in 2006 after 41 years. Many of his students have won vocal competitions at the local, state and national levels and are now professional singers.
Dmitry Sitkovetsky, music director and conductor of the Greensboro Symphony, will be among the judges.
Admission is $10 adults for each round and winner’s recital or $25 weekend pass. Student prices are $12 weekend pass, or $5 per round.
Visit http://www.uncg.edu/mus/CALVCWebsite/ for additional information or to view the names of this year's semi-finalists.
Fifth Annual New Music Festival Presents Unimaginable Music and Unruly Artists
The Fifth Annual New Music Festival will feature the work of unconventional artists whose trademark is their unique sound and performance style. The event, titled “Unimaginable Music and Unruly Artists,” will be held Tuesday through Thursday, October 28-30, at the School of Music and the Weatherspoon Art Museum. The festival consists of concerts, lectures, presentations and master classes given by regional, national and international artists.
Featured guest artists this year will be percussion and flute duo Due East, featuring Erin Lesser and Greg Beyer. Their musical palette extends from multi-media and technology-driven works, to sonic experiences that call for rare, world music instruments played in combination with folksong-like vocals and narratives.
Other artists include composer and off-beat vocalist Ken Ueno, winner of the coveted Rome Prize for composers; sound-text and visual artist Michael Basinski; and Argentine composer Nora Ponte.
Legendary improvisational guitarist and Greensboro resident Eugene Chadbourne, whose highly eclectic style has influenced artists from the Mothers of Invention to John Zorn, will also perform.
The festival also includes performances by UNCG faculty members including: Mark Engebretson, Seth Ellis, Lorena Guillén, Alejandro Rutty, Steve Stusek, Inara Zandmane, and UNCG student performers.
For more information about the festival or a complete schedule of events, visit http://www.uncg.edu/mus/NewMusicFest. Tickets are available through the UNCG Box Office at (336) 334-4849.
A Birthday Celebration for an American Jazz Legend
The School of Music will honor jazz legend Wayne Shorter on Saturday, November 1, at 5:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. The concert will feature performances by School of Music Student Jazz Combos, Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble and the Faculty Jazz Quintet.
Shorter, a jazz composer and saxophonist, is commonly regarded as one of the most important American jazz saxophonists and composers since the 1960s. He has recorded dozens of albums as a leader and appeared on dozens more with others including Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the late 1950s, Miles Davis's second great quintet in the 1960s and the jazz-rock fusion band Weather Report, which Shorter co-led in the 1970s. Many of his compositions have become standards.
Tickets are $10 Adults, $6 Seniors and $4 Students, $3 UNCG. Call the UNCG Box Office at (336) 334-4849 or visit http://boxoffice.uncg.edu to purchase tickets.
