PIANO PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

Repertoire
1-2. Two prepared solos to be selected from the works designated as Solo Repertoire in Alfred's Group Piano for Adults, Book 2, by E.L.Lancaster and Kenon D. Renfrow. Memory not required.

Sight Reading
3. One selection from the Reading sections of the Text

Keyboard Harmony
4. The student will play the following harmonic progressions in all major keys: I, IV, I, V7, I (pg. 40): I, IV, vii, iii, vi, ii, V, I (pg. 56):  and I, IV, V7/V, V7, I (pg. 101).
5. The student will harmonize at sight a melody selected from the harmonization examples in the text. The use of jump bass, waltz bass, or alberti bass will be demonstrated.

Improvisation and Transposition
6. The student will demonstrate rudimentary knowledge of blues improvisation. The prepared performance should include the 12-bar Blues progression in the left hand. Note: all 7th chords are Major-minor 7th chords. I7| I7| I7| I7| - IV7| IV7| I7| I7| - V7| IV7| I7| I7|. The right hand melody should include Blue notes (flatted 3rd, flatted 5th, and flatted 7th) and make use of the call and response structure for each four-bar phrase. The Blues Demonstration should be transposed to one additional key. (Page 47)

Score Reading
7. The student will prepare one of the following excerpts: "German Waltz," pages 110-111, "The Carnival of Venice," page 167, "Symphony No. 7," page 214, "Quartet in D Minor," page 309, "Wenn so lind dein auge mir," page 310, or "Credo," page 329.

Technique
8. Major and harmonic minor scales (MM 60 = a quarter note) Scales in sixteenth notes, two octaves, hands alone. (Page 374-375)
9. Major, minor, augmented and diminished triads in all inversions, hands alone. (Pages 24-25)
10. All Major 7th,  dominant 7th, minor 7th, half-diminished 7th and fully-diminished 7th chords in root position. hands alone. (Page 125)
