Hey Mozart!™

Hey Mozart!™:
UNCG's Inter-Generational
Partnership for Music-Making

About

Hey, Mozart!™ is a unique program that orchestras and arts organizations can adopt to bring new audiences, both young and old, to the concert hall while creating new and exciting educational programming.

How Hey, Mozart!™ Works:
The Hey, Mozart!™ Child Composer Project invites children of your area, up to age 12, to submit original musical compositions or melodies. About 15 of these melodies are selected and then orchestrated by a team of arrangers coordinated by Hey, Mozart™. A studio recording of those arrangements is made, and at a later concert performed immediately following the child's original version.

Mission Statement:
Hey, Mozart!™'s core assumption is that music created by children, as opposed to children's music composed by adults, will help foster greater interest and appreciation for music among young people. The project also establishes a bridge between child composers and adults – those professionals and students who contribute their skills to the project as arrangers, producers and performers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can we bring Hey, Mozart!™ into our community?
Your organization can license the project from UNCG. The cost of the license includes all assistance you will need for instituting a successful project in your area. Contact Alejandro Rutty at UNCG School of Music (ahrutty@uncg.edu) for details.

Who can bring Hey, Mozart!™ into their community?
Arts organizations, symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, youth orchestras, Arts education advocacy groups, etc

What are the benefits of establishing a Hey, Mozart!™ in my area?
Hey, Mozart™ is an excellent way to build new audiences, expand the reach of your organization, and assure extremely positive PR.

Hey, Mozart™! creates a partnership for music-making between the children (providing the melodies), the arrangers (providing the orchestral writing, and harmonies), and the orchestras performing the music. Your organization can become the catalyst for institutions in your area: elementary schools, colleges, and symphony orchestras. Hey Mozart™ provides a unique outlet for the creativity of children in your area.

Can we do the project without the assistance of UNCG?
The first year of the project will require intense assistance and partnership from the team of Hey, Mozart™ at UNCG. On the second and third years, we will assist you in gaining control of most of the project aspects. After the first three years, your organization can continue the project almost completely with local resources. A small licensing fee still applies, which will provide access to technical and strategic support.

What is the cost of Hey, Mozart!™?
The cost varies greatly depending on the scope of your reach and the resources of your organization. The project can be scaled up or down depending on your organization's possibilities. We will be happy to give you an idea of how much money will be needed to bring Hey, Mozart™ to your community.

What is the Project Timeline?
It takes about a year from the announcement to the completion of the project.

What Does UNCG do for my Hey Mozart!™?
On the first year, UNCG will:

  • Oversee all technical and artistic aspects of the project, including overall time-frame
  • Oversee the PR public definition of the project, and strategies to receive submissions
  • Advise your organization in setting up the legal framework, paperwork, and activities needed to run the project
  • Advise your organization on communications with the participants, design of the event, etc.
  • Select the winning melodies (and oversee the pre-selection committee)
  • Select and coordinate the team of arrangers from all partnering institutions, provide guidelines and rules of the arranging process.
  • Oversee the collaboration with colleges and universities in your community to identify partners for the project
  • Provide an editor for the arrangements
  • Provide a producer for the recording session
  • Plan recording according to available funds-musical needs-technical access
  • Advise your organization on outreach to teachers, (conduct workshops for teachers if possible)
  • Oversee CD artwork, decide the order of the tracks on the CD based on the recording
  • Advise on CD duplication

On the second and third years, UNCG will:

  • Advise the melody selection committee
  • Provide a co-editor of the arrangements (together with the local artistic director)
  • Provide a co-producer for the recording session.
  • Conduct workshops for teachers (if needed)
  • Advise on upgrades and growth of the program

We are a symphony orchestra. What do we need to do to include a Hey, Mozart!™ program with child composers from our community in our season?
Symphony orchestras would just need to advertise the program, and perform at the concert; all other technical aspects can be taken care by Hey, Mozart™ at UNCG.

We are a youth orchestra; can we have our orchestra play on recording of the CD?
If the performance level of the youth orchestra is high enough, your organization may save money by doing the recording session.

We are a Chamber Music Society, or a New Music Society. How can we participate if we don't have access to our local symphony orchestra?
The project can work just as well with a chamber-size orchestra. It is advantageous to use a "ad-hoc" ensemble if your local symphony is too expensive or out of reach for your group.

Why is it "inter-generational partnership for music making"?
It is inter-generational because the melodies are composed by children, half of the orchestral arrangements are created by college age musicians, half of the orchestral arrangements are created by professional arrangers, the performance includes the children and a symphony orchestra.

It is a partnership because, unlike most music programs for children, the role of the adults and the professionals is NOT to instruct the children about how music is played, but to be as a partner in a project in which each group has a different role.
