The School of Music takes pride in being one of the best music schools in the nation. With programs available from the baccalaureate through the doctoral levels, we believe that the quality of musical education you receive at UNCG is of exceptional value. You might be asking, “What distinguishes the UNCG School of Music as one of the best?” Here are some ways:


  • Our graduate programs rank in the top 30 among all institutions and in the top 14 among state-supported institutions, according to US News and World Report.
  • The School of Music houses the largest cello music collection in the world, including the archives of such notables as Luigi Silva, Fritz Magg, Bernard Greenhouse, and Laszlo Varga.
  • The Music Research Institute is the only such entity of its kind throughout the nation, serving as an umbrella organization for faculty research in music perception/cognition, neural imaging, genomic bases of musicality, noise-induced hearing disorders, and others.
  • The UNCG Opera Theatre has won prestigious awards from the National Opera Association 7 times in the past 9 years.
  • The School of Music is the only school in North Carolina that offers doctoral degrees in music education and performance.

  • The Miles Davis Jazz Program is one of the leading jazz education programs in the region
  • The Focus on Piano Literature, held every two years, has gained national acclaim as one of the leading such symposia in the nation, while the cello celebrations have drawn considerable attention to the cello collection.
  • Music faculty members serve as Presidents of prestigious professional associations, such as the American Bandmasters Association, Music Teachers National Association, and the International Tuba and Euphonium Association, and the North American Saxophone Alliance.
  • The School has earned accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music continuously since 1938.

The mission of the UNCG School of Music is:

  1. to provide a rich, stimulating environment in which students can develop as music professionals through a comprehensive curriculum enhanced by the liberal arts for undergraduate students, and through study, training, and experiences for graduate students (through the doctoral level) that will enable them to become specialists and leaders in their fields
  2. to offer a variety of opportunities for musical growth and creative achievement for all University students; and
  3. to function as a center of intellectual, educational, and cultural excellence on campus, regionally, nationally, and globally.

The School of Music has been an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1938.
