Excellence and Distinguished Professorships

Endowed faculty positions for artists and scholars have assumed increasing importance in the field of music. The best candidates for positions in the School of Music will understandably be offered the highest salaries that our institution can justify, but many prospective faculty appreciate the prestige that an endowed faculty position provides. An Excellence Professorship allows the school to search for artists and scholars who have widely distinguished themselves as both performers and pedagogues. The monies provided by these professorships allow us to compete in the marketplace of performance and academia, giving us the opportunity to recruit the most talented and well-known faculty. An Excellence Professorship can be established with a minimum gift of $350,000 to which the state adds $167,000, creating an endowment of over $500,000. Dr. Donald Hodges is the Covington Distinguished Professor of Music Education and director of the Music Research Institute. Additional endowment levels for named professorships require gifts of $666,000; $1,000,000; or $1,333,000, all of which include a partial match from the State of North Carolina’s Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund.
