Jury Requirements-Jazz Performance Major

Freshman Jazz Majors are not required to play a jazz jury during their first semester. To be enrolled into the 253 jazz level, students must pass the Jazz Theory Proficiency Test, taken in completion of MUS 103 (Principles of Jazz Theory) of the freshman year. During the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years, students must take jazz juries each semester. The jury panel will consist of at least two faculty members from the jazz area. Each jury will last ten minutes and will demonstrate the proficiency of the student in the field of jazz studies

Note: Students MUST acheive 351 classical proficiency in order to enroll in Performance Studies in Jazz (MUS 353)

  • The students are advised to come well warmed up, on time, and dressed appropriately.
  • All scales are expected to be played two octaves, "through the cycle"; that is, in every key.
  • Each student, regardless of instrument, must play the assigned melodies by memory and be able to improvise "over the changes".
  • If the student would rather prepare tunes that are not listed, the student must receive approval from his or her principal studio teacher.
  • Sightreading may accompany juries.
