Jury

  • Jury grades are either a pass or fail. Failed recitals may be reattempted the following semester, at the discretion of the primary instructor.
  • You are expected to have a full rhythm section (drums, bass, and comping instruments-piano or guitar) to support you with your jazz tunes.
  • You must perform at least four jazz tunes in contrasting styles. They may come from the following styles:
    • medium swing
    • ballad
    • straight eighth
    • up tempo
  • You are entirely responsible for choosing, rehearsing, and performing with your band members.
  • You are required to have arrangements prepared for your standards.
  • Consult beforehand with someone from the jazz faculty to ensure that the tunes you choose to do are acceptable. Original compositions are acceptable only with the consent of the jazz faculty.
  • Dress: A coat and tie equivalent are required, including everyone in the band. Do not let your school down by dressing inappropriately!
  • Two members from the jazz faculty must be present during your recital.
  • All recitals will be played in the UNCG recital hall.

Find available dates from with your chosen jazz faculty to ensure that they are able to attend the recital. Then, check availability with Mary Anne Bolick by sending an email to mabolick@uncg.edu for your recital and dress rehearsal dates. Check online at http://musical.uncg.edu for availability. Include on your date request form whether you need amplification. The school will provide you with this at no charge. As well, your recital will be recorded.
