COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
- To
gain a general understanding of the history of jazz.
- To
understand the basic elements of jazz: melody, harmony, rhythm,
form, texture.
- To
gain a general understanding of jazz improvisation.
- To
develop the ability to identify and label jazz styles.
GRADING:
Grades are based on a 10-point scale. NO MAKEUPS GIVEN. A MISSED
TEST OR LISTENING REPORT IS GIVEN A GRADE OF ZERO.
There
are 3 tests, a Final Exam, and 4 listening reports. Your LOWEST TEST
SCORE
(NOT the Final Exam) WILL BE DROPPED, and the remaining scores weighted
as follows:

ATTENDANCE:
At the end of each class, each student will sign the attendance roster.
STUDENTS
WITH 3 OR LESS ABSENCES FOR THE SEMESTER WILL BE AWARDED
5 PERCENTAGE POINTS TO THEIR COURSE GRADE. The responsibility for
class
attendance is specifically placed upon the individual student. In
no instance does
absence from class relieve students from the responsibility for the
performance of any
part of their course work. Please be on time and do not leave class
early. There is a 15
minute break during class. USE THIS BREAK to stretch, get a drink,
or use the
restroom. DO NOT leave during class to attend to these things. If
you must leave early,
please tell me before class begins. PLEASE TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONIC
GADGETS THAT MAKE NOISE. Music majors should be aware that School
of
Music concerts may affect class attendance.
LISTENING REPORTS:
You will receive and use the listening report handout (instruction
cover sheet) for each
Report. The handouts will be in an envelope on our classroom door.
Homework
for this class consists of 4 LISTENING REPORTS. For each report, listen
to 3 songs and submit a review on the proper due date. CHOOSE AN ARTIST
FROM
THE ATTACHED LIST. Use a DIFFERENT performer/band from the attached
list for
each of your reports. DO NOT use listening examples from our textbook.
Excellent
sources for jazz recordings include the Music Listening Center (located
in the
Music Building). You may also use jazz recordings that you own (from
artists on the
attached list) or a live jazz concert at any College or University
(include the printed
program).
A LATE
OR MISSING REPORT IS GIVEN A GRADE OF ZERO. THERE ARE NO
EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS.
TESTS:
- Tests
are given at the beginning of class.
- Bring
a #2 pencil.
- I
will provide the scantron sheets. The student will put their full
name (last name first) and last 4 digits of their Social Security
# on the scantron sheet.
Students
are expected to be familiar with and abide by the Student Code of
Conduct and the
Academic Integrity Policy.
All
test scores will be posted on our classroom door using the last 4
digits of your Social Security numbers. If you DO NOT want your scores
posted in this fashion, please let me know.
