CLASSES

Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 10:00-10:50 am, rooms 111/140

ABSENCES

A maximum of two unexcused absences will be allowed. Excess absence will result in a lowered semester grade, of a 'WF', at the discretion of the instructor.

OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to develop the student's jazz vocabulary and improvisational skills This will be done by means of ear training, the study of jazz theory and nomenclature, listening, transcriptions, and playing.

GRADING

Transcriptions- due at the beginning of classes noted below:

  • Caravan, (Wynton Marsalis) Due January 27nd 15%
  • Student Choice (must be approved) Due Monday, March 3 15%
  • Giant Steps (John Coltrane) Due Monday, April 1415%

Tests (all melodies and changes must be memorized)

  • Friday, February 17(Caravan, Witch Hunt, Oleo) 15%
  • Friday, March 31(Blues for Alice, Stella by Starlight, Blue in Green) 15%
  • Friday, May 2 (Miss Jones, Inner Urge, Giant Steps) 15%

Attendance/Participation, Pop Quizzes 10%

Note: There is no final exam for this course.

UNIVERSITY EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS

Failure to return university owned property used in conjunction with or related to this course in a timely manner will result in a grade of "INCOMPLETE", until such property is properly returned.

PHYSICAL CONTACT

Normal instruction in jazz improvisation may involve a certain amount of limited and neutral physical contact between the teacher and the student, when dealing with such topics as breathing, posture, technique, and tension. It is the responsibility of the student who is uncomfortable with this physical contact to immediately inform the teacher of that discomfort.
