CLASSES

Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30- 10:50 am, room 207


ABSENCES

A maximum of two unexcused absences will be allowed. Excess absence will result in a lowered semester grade, of a ‘WF’, at the discretion of the instructor.


OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to enhance the student’s vocabulary, language, study, and pedagogy of jazz. This will be done by means of the study of jazz theory, nomenclature, listening, playing, conducting, and observation:

Small Group Jazz- Roles of Instruments and Players, rehearsal techniques

Rehearsal Techniques for Large Jazz Ensemble- Conducting, Score Preparation

GRADING

Rehearsal Observation 20%
Conducting 10%
Paper 20%
Concert/Gig Attendance 20%
Attendance/Participation, Pop Quizzes, Pop Assignments 10%
Final Examination (in class, Thursday, Dec. 5th) 20%


CONDUCTING

Students will be conducting the UNCG Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble. Charts will be chosen for you, and, you will also be given the opportunity to choose music that you would like to rehearse.

The UNCG Jazz Band meets at noon to 12:50 in room 111 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The UNCG Jazz Ensemble meets also M-W-F from 2:00- 2:50 pm in room 111.

REHEARSAL OBSERVATION

Students are required to observe five jazz ensemble rehearsals (large or small- but at least two rehearsals must be large jazz ensemble). As well, only one rehearsal may be observed at UNCG. You are expected to go to jazz ensembles in the community.

Take notes on the following: date, name of band, name of director, time of rehearsal, duration of rehearsal, names of tunes rehearsals, rehearsal techniques used and effectiveness of the director. Pass these reviews in at the end of the semester.

CONCERT/GIG ATTENDANCE

Students are required to attend five jazz concerts or gigs (large or small- but at least one must be large jazz ensemble). Only one concert may be attended at UNCG. You are expected to go to the gigs/concerts offered by the community.

Take brief notes on the following: date, name of band, name of director (if any), names of musicians (required only for small group), names of tunes, and what you liked/disliked about the performance. Pass these reviews in at the end of the semester.

UNIVERSITY EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS

Failure to return university owned property used in conjunction with or related to this course in a timely manner will result in a grade of “INCOMPLETE”, until such property is properly returned.

PHYSICAL CONTACT

Normal instruction in jazz improvisation may involve a certain amount of limited and neutral physical contact between the teacher and the student, when dealing with such topics as breathing, posture, technique, and tension. It is the responsibility of the student who is uncomfortable with this physical contact to immediately inform the teacher of that discomfort.
