CLASSES
are scheduled with your small group. You are required to meet one hour
a week. Small Groups will meet in rooms 111 and 140 (see below) Bass
and guitar amplifiers will be provided. Drums sets are provided- drummers
must bring their own cymbals, snare drums, and clutch.
ATTENDANCE
by you, or an occasional substitute, is mandatory. If you can not make
a rehearsal you must call a competent substitute. You may only use a
substitute for gigs when in dire sickness! Your fellow members of the
group are counting on you to be there. Letting your group down due to
lateness or absence will result in a lowered grade, or a ‘WF’,
at the discretion of the instructor.
If for some reason
the group does not meet, you must make up your missed time during the
same week.
OBJECTIVES
This is a practical course, designed for a hands-on application of jazz
in a small group setting. Objectives depend on the level of each combo.
Students will enhance their ability to communicate the 'jazz language'
and become more flexible with improvisation in a group setting. Some
standard repertoire will be memorized. We will also do a lot of listening.
UNIVERSITY
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS
Failure to return
university owned property used in conjunction with or related to this
course in a timely manner will result in a grade of “INCOMPLETE”,
until such property is properly returned.
GRADING
Your instructor
will inform you of your tests and quizzes, and performances. You will
be expected to do two public performances.
One of
the public performances MUST be before Saturday, March 13. Note: failure
to perform will result in a reduced grade!
PHYSICAL
CONTACT
Normal instruction
in jazz improvisation may involve a certain amount of limited and neutral
physical contact between the teacher and the student, when dealing with
such topics as breathing, posture, technique, and tension. It is the
responsibility of the student who is uncomfortable with this physical
contact to immediately inform the teacher of that discomfort.
