School of Nursing Timeline


June 5, 1965:  Governor Dan K. Moore, chair of the University of North Carolina Board of Trustees pronounced the appropriation of monies for a four year program in nursing on the Greensboro campus.

November 16, 1965:  UNCG faculty approve by unanimous vote the inauguration of the Baccalaureate Degree Program in Nursing.

February 1, 1966The first Dean, Eloise R. Lewis, Ed.D., MSEd, BSN. is appointed for the proposed School of Nursing.

July, 1966:  An architectural is selected to design and build the School of Nursing.

September 1, 1966:  Dean Eloise R. Lewis arrives to plan the curriculum and to recruit faculty for the UNCG School of Nursing.

September 12, 1966:  Dean Lewis meets with the first 30 students admitted to UNCG who declare their intent to major in nursing (to be admitted to upper division in September 1968).

February 24, 1967:  The North Carolina State Board of Higher Education approved the proposal for the Baccalaureate Degree Program in Nursing at UNC at Greensboro.

September 5, 1967: The first six faculty members arrive:  Billie Boette, MA, BSN, Psychiatric Nursing; Shelley Jones, MS, BSN, Public Health Nursing; Margaret Klemmer, MS, BSNE, Maternal-Child Nursing; Margaret C. Moore, MS, MA, BS, Medical-Surgical Nursing; Sandra Reed, PhD, MS, BSN, Maternal Child Nursing; and Ernestine Small, MS, BSN, Medical-Surgical Nursing.

June 25, 1968:  The North Carolina Board of Nursing grants full accreditation to the School of Nursing.

September 16, 1969:  The School of Nursing building was occupied and later dedicated on October 5, 1969.

April 27, 1970:  The School of Nursing is accredited by the National League of Nursing.

May 31, 1970:  The first class of eighteen completes the requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree.  The School was notified on July 30 that all graduates passed the State Board Examinations and were licensed to practice as registered nurses.

May 1976:  The University of North Carolina Board of Governors approves the Master of Science in Nursing degree program.

October 1976:  Gamma Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society of nursing, is installed.  The School of Nursing Building is named the Margaret C. Moore, a faculty member from 1967 until her death on November 30, 1975.

December 1978:  The Masters Program receives initial accreditation by the National League of Nursing.
