MSN Outreach Program

GENERAL INFORMATION

The UNCG School of Nursing, in collaboration with the Northwest Area Health Education Center (NWAHEC), offers the Nursing Education Concentration in our MSN Outreach Program. It is a part-time program designed for the working BSN wishing to earn the MSN degree. Classes are held at the Northwest AHEC building adjacent to Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, NC on Tuesdays. Classes meet from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and are taught by UNCG faculty.

The 36 credit hour program is eight semesters in length (three fall and spring semesters and two summer sessions). Students are admitted only at the start of each program offering: the next program is planned to begin in August 2008.

ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM

Admission to the program is on a first-come first-served basis according to the date of submission of a MSN Prospective Student Record form. Students must also be admitted to the Graduate School at UNCG prior to starting the program. Applications can be downloaded from the Graduate School’s website or by calling 336-334-5596. To maintain program quality and meet student needs, class size is limited to 20. Should the need arise, a waiting list will be created.

UNCG ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program
  2. A minimum GPA of 3.0
  3. Satisfactory score on the GRE or MAT taken within five years.
  4. A minimum of one year of full-time clinical nursing experience.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  1. Current unrestricted license as registered nurse in North Carolina or in state covered by multi-state nurse licensure compact.
  2. Completion of inferential statistics course prior to enrollment in NUR 601.
  3. Competency in basic health assessment prior to NUR 651.
  4. Completion of Parts A & B of the UNCG Immunization Form with the exception of the meningococcal vaccine.
  5. Current CPR certification and immunizations prior to NUR651, NUR652, and NUR653.

Students must also complete a thesis or advanced nursing project (minimum of 3 SH) prior to graduation. The Graduate School expects students earning a masters degree to complete coursework and the thesis/advanced project within a 5-year time limit. Exceptions are handled on an individual basis.

Courses will combine independent learning activities, web-based activities, and traditional instructional methods.

COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS

Students must have access to a computer with the following:

  • Operating system:
    • Windows 98 or higher or
    • MAC OS 9 or higher
  • Microsoft Office Suite 2000 or later
  • Email and instant messaging
  • Internet connection: 56Kbps modem or fast access (preferred)

PROGRAM COSTS

Tuition & Fees: NC Resident: $103.50 per credit; Non-NC Resident: $645.20 per credit. These costs, current as of 8/04, are subject to change.

Books & computer access: cost varies.

Additional costs: Liability insurance purchased through the School of Nursing Group Policy prior to NUR 651.
