Dear Undergraduate Research Mentor:
The Analytical Sciences Digital Library (ASDL) invites you and your students to submit a manuscript to be considered for publication in the inaugural volume of an electronic journal, eUndergraduate Research (eUGR). This eJournal will be a feature of the online section of the ASDL website, complementing the library collection. The ASDL website went online in November 2002 and now contains over 325 URL links to peer-reviewed websites useful in the teaching and learning of analytical science. The collection is freely accessible at www.asdlib.org .
The editors of ASDL recognize that the unique nature of undergraduate research often involves multiple students over an extended time period. It is desirable to offer students involved in a project an opportunity to report their results to the scientific community at large, many times before the logical end of the total project.
Online publishing on eUGR offers a unique medium for presenting the results of undergraduate research. Articles may describe research in progress, or research results that are not yet of sufficient scope to support publication in a main line printed journal. Authors may periodically update a published article as new results, perhaps from other students, are obtained. Faculty authors will retain all copyrights under the Creative Commons Agreement ( http://creativecommons.org ). Any author wishing later to publish all or part of an eUGR article in a printed journal may choose either to withdraw the article from the ASDL site or to retain the article on the site as a designated draft of the print article.
Manuscripts should be submitted as a PDF file, limited to under 10 double spaced pages (Times New Roman 10 preferred), and may include up to 5 embedded figures or tables. Articles should describe research that is original, innovative, or discovery based, including extensions to an analytical method or application. Each article will be peer reviewed, and if revision is required, authors will have an opportunity to respond to the reviewers’ comments prior to publication. Complete guidelines for eUGR publication can be found at www.asdlib.org/guidelines.php?type=eUGR . The deadline for the receipt of manuscripts for the inaugural volume of eUGR is January 1, 2007. Volume I is expected to be completed and online on or before March 15, 2007.
You may also be interested in submitting a poster of undergraduate research results to the ePoster section of ASDL. Submitted posters may include those presented at local or national scientific meetings and NSF-REU programs. More information on this feature can be found at www.asdlib.org/articles.php?type=poster.
We hope that you and your students will choose to participate in this new and exciting forum for undergraduate research results. Please feel free to pass this notice along to others in your department who might also be interested. Further information can be obtained at the ASDL website or by contacting one of the editors at their email address below.
Sincerely,
Rick Kelly Heather Bullen
