Who do I contact for more information?
What are the office hours of the department?
- 8 am to 5 pm; Office hours for individual faculty members vary and can be
obtained by contacting Ms. Walker at 336-334-3240.
Where is the Public Health Education Department located?
- The Public Health Department is on the fourth floor of the Health and Human Performance (HHP) Building in Room 437. The HHP building faces Walker Avenue and is across from the Walker Parking deck. The most direct access to the Public Health Department is through the entry doors facing Shaw Hall residence dorm beside the tennis courts.
How do I get to UNCG?
How do I get my class schedule?
- The schedule depends on whether you are full-time or part-time. In addition, students who transfer into the program may not be on the same schedule. Go to the PHE Curriculum page for more information. Transfer students should contact Dr. Kay Lovelace for more information.
How do I register?
- You can register once your get your letter in the mail of acceptance and notification that registration is open to you. Before you can register, you must set up your UNCG computer accounts. To do that go to http://accounts.uncg.edu/ Once you have set up your accounts, to register go to http://www.uncg.edu/reg/Reg/index.html .
What do I need to complete before class starts?
- You must have completed your immunizations and sent in official confirmation of the required immunizations. You will be sent instructions and the official form to complete in the mail.
- Before classes start you should have set up your computer accounts and registered for class . It is also helpful to have your books, which you can purchase at the on-campus student bookstore or just use to reference which books you need and attain them elsewhere. For new students, a student ID is required for certain activities, like use of the gym and the library, so this is also recommended either before classes start or at the beginning of the semester.
Is there an orientation for the department?
- There is no orientation prior to the beginning of classes. The first class will be used as an informal orientation and introduction to the faculty.
How do I develop a plan of study?
- You develop a plan of study by the end of your first year.
What books do I need for my classes?
- To find the required books for your courses, check the UNCG Bookstore at http://uncg.bkstore.com/ . The Public Health Education core classes are designated by the code "HEA" followed by the course number. Refer to your registration for the specific classes you are registered for.
Are there recommended electives?
- Electives are a chance for you to explore and further develop your own specific public health or health related interests. The department recommends some electives in the suggested curriculum, but this is in no way a complete list of available options. You can explore other alternatives on your own, keeping in mind that the course must be a 500 level or above (and must be listed for graduate credit).
What is the required minimum grade to graduate/remain in the program?
- The minimum grade point average to remain in the program and to graduate is a B. Grades below a B in any specific course are acceptable, but may indicate cause for concern and require discussion with your advisor or the faculty member teaching the course.
When do I need to apply for graduation and how do I do it?
- You must apply for graduation in your second year. Additional information on this is available in the Graduate Handbook available to all students through the Graduate Office in the Mossman Building.
What financial assistance is available?
- Financial support is available for qualified full-time students in the form of graduate assistantships, research assistantships, and in-state and out-of-state tuition waivers. For more information and an application, contact the Department.

What is required for every student?

How will I be notified of important information like registration and billing?
- As a new student, you will be notified of your acceptance and other requirements through the mail. Your notification for registration will be sent in the mail as well, but you will be notified that any additional notifications for all subject matters will be done through your UNCG computer accounts and email. It is important to set up your computer accounts as soon as possible to verify that you are receiving all notifications.
Which classes do I register for?
Are there teaching/research assistantships available? How do I apply for them? When are they assigned?
- There are often teaching and research assistantships available each semester. To apply go to (link to Assistantships and Student Employment). Most assistantships are assigned prior to the beginning of the semester. For new students the best option is to indicate an interest in the assistantships on your application. Once you are accepted, contact the Wanda Walker at (336) 334-5532 to see if there are opportunities for assistantships still available.
