Our Plans and Budget Limitations
Our PDToPPs/MSP/PTRA Institutes are funded by a grant from the
NC Department of Public Instruction, which is, in turn, funded by the National
Science Foundation MSP (Math and Science Partnership) Program. Our first summer --- 2008 – went well, with
our two institutes fully subscribed and a lot of positive comments from
participants. This didn’t surprise us as
PTRA (Physics Teaching Resource Agents) has a long and successful history
working with the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) conducting
this kind of program.
We applied
for funds to expand our offering from one institute (1 week) per summer at UNCG
(University of North Carolina at Greensboro) and UNCP (UNC Pembroke) to 2 per
summer, and to expand to UNCC (UNC Charlotte).
Though we had preliminary indications that we could support this
expansion --- as well as support an increase in the stipend we pay teachers –
it turned out that funds were only available for 4 workshops in 2009 with a
modest increase in stipends. We plan to
expand to 6 workshops in 2010.
