Professional
Development for Teachers of Physical Science/Physics
PDToPPS
What?
A series of 1-week summer institutes
sponsored by UNCG, UNCP, UNCC and the American Association of Physics Teachers
PTRA program. Each institute covers
one the following topics:
Motions and forces
Energy and momentum
Electricity and
circuits
Waves and sound
(future workshop – contingent upon funding)
Waves and light
(future workshop – contingent upon funding)
Who
should be interested?
Any teacher of physical science or physics
(middle school or high school) who would like to improve his or her teaching
skills and knowledge of basic physics (and earn CEU credit at the same
time). CEU (professional development)
credit will be available to all teachers participating. Participants will learn classroom-tested
instructional techniques and gain experience with equipment that is useful and
fun in the physics/physical science classroom.
When
and Where?
June 2009 at UNC
Pembroke
July, August 2009 at
UNC
July 2009 at UNC
Charlotte
All sessions on a particular topic are
identical (no matter where it is taught) --- pick the one most convenient for
you in either location or time.
Enrollment preference will be given to those teachers enrolling at an
Institute close to their home school, and to teachers who enroll in two Institutes
or have attended a PDToPPS institute in a previous
summer.
Cost?
Free! Each teacher is provided a stipend to
attend (approximately $12/hour for 30 hours). All classroom materials are
provided. Meals and lodging or travel will be provided up to $50/day. If
funding is available stipend will increase for teachers who progress through
several Institutes in several summers.
How
do I sign up?

by the April deadline with your refundable check for $75 (for each Institute
requested) to hold your place in the Institute.
Priority will be given to teachers from
Forsyth,
Who
provides this opportunity?
A grant from North Carolina DPI supports this
project. Instructors are provided by PTRA (Physics Teaching Resource Agents), a
project of the American Association of Physics Teachers. PTRA has more than 20
years experience running workshops like this; PTRA instructors are classroom
teachers certified as professional development providers.
