Professional Development for Teachers of Physics/Physical Science

PDToPPS

What?

A series of 1-week summer institutes sponsored by UNCG, UNCP, Belmont Abbey College and the American Association of Physics Teachers PTRA program.  Each institute covers one the following topics:

Energy and momentum

Electricity and circuits

Waves and light

Magnetism

Who should be interested?

Any teacher of physical science or physics (middle school or high school) who would like to improve his or her teaching skills and knowledge of basic physics (and earn CEU credit at the same time).  CEU (professional development) credit will be available to all teachers participating.  Participants will learn classroom-tested instructional techniques and gain experience with equipment that is useful and fun in the physics/physical science classroom.

When and Where?

June 2010 at UNC Pembroke in Robeson County

July, August 2010 at UNC Greensboro

June, August 2010 at Belmont Abbey College in the Charlotte area

All sessions on a particular topic are identical (no matter where it is taught) --- pick the one most convenient for you in either location or time, but you may only take a particular topic (for example (“Waves and Light”) one time.  Enrollment preference will be given to those teachers enrolling at an Institute close to their home school, and to teachers who enroll in two Institutes or have attended a PDToPPS institute in a previous summer.  Each participant may sign up for as many as 3 institutes in summer of 2010.

Cost?

Free! Each teacher is provided a stipend to attend ($12/hour for 30 hours for first-time participants, $14/hour for returning participants). All classroom materials are provided. Meals and lodging or travel will be provided up to $50/day.

How do I sign up?

Complete the application form, and return it by the April deadline with your refundable check for $75 (for each Institute requested) to hold your place in the Institute.

Priority will be given to teachers from Forsyth, Guilford and Robeson, and Mecklenburg counties prior to the April deadline. Applications will be accepted from any teacher after April on a space-available basis. The $75 check will be returned to you during the Institute.

Who provides this opportunity?

A grant from North Carolina DPI supports this project. Instructors are provided by PTRA (Physics Teaching Resource Agents), a project of the American Association of Physics Teachers. PTRA has more than 20 years experience running workshops like this; PTRA instructors are classroom teachers certified as professional development providers.
