The electricians provide a service to the students, faculty, and staff by providing good lighting for safety and security. They also offer the comfort of knowing the buildings are equipped with smoke and fire systems throughout the buildings. The electricians are responsible for all power on campus. They have several electrical tasks they perform which include fire alarm systems, exterior lighting for buildings, parking decks, walkways, and streets. They also provide power for emergency generators in critical areas. The electricians offer support to Duke Power. Duke Power supplies power to one central sub-station which switches the power to usable voltages for each building. They also help contractors with access to buildings, location of equipment and underground locating of utilities. They respond to fire alarm calls from the Police Department and the alarm companies that help repair and check the various systems we have on campus. They offer power wagons at special events and work closely with the other shops and departments on campus.
