ENERGY & WATER CONSERVATION TIPS
1. Turn off building lights when leaving. Turn off the coffee maker, TV, radio, computer, etc., when leaving at the end of each day.
2. Turn off all lights in closets and storage areas when not in use.
3. Close doors and windows when building is heated and air-conditioned.
4. Report any water leaks or building Heating & Air-Conditioning problems to work information center at Facilities Operations for repair.
5. Turn personal computers off or have them revert to “sleep mode” when not in use, especially overnight.
6. Purchase the most energy efficient appliances and electronics. See EPA Energy Star website at http://www.energystar.gov/.
7. Close fume hoods in laboratories when not in use.
8. Do not leave the water running while brushing your teeth or shaving.
9. Use battery operated clocks in offices.
ENERGY & WATER CONSERVATION GOALS
1. Install occupancy sensors for offices, classrooms, and bathrooms.
2. Install night setback for HVAC systems for offices and classroom buildings.
3. Install automatic lighting controls for offices and classroom buildings to turn off hallway lights to minimum when building is unoccupied.
4. Obtain an IT policy for energy management of computers campus wide.
5. Replace incandescent lighting with compact fluorescent.
6. Replace T-12 fluorescent lighting with T-8 and electronic ballasts.
7. Install LED exit lights.
8. Install high efficiency motors in new construction and when replacing existing motors.
9. Install variable frequency drives (VFD) on motors in HVAC systems.
10. Install low flow toilets and urinals with automatic flush (“hands-free”).
11. Install automatic flow (“hands-free”) sink faucets.
12. Add rain sensors to irrigation systems.
13. Irrigate during early morning hours to reduce evaporation.
14. Use mulch to reduce irrigating.
15. Plant drought resistant, native species whenever possible to reduce the need for watering.
