Letter from the Director

Kenneth A. Klase

The Political Science Department at UNCG offers the Master's of Public Affairs (MPA) for both full and part-time students. This program has enabled us to put together a distinguished faculty whose research and teaching interests make possible a variety of class structures and learning experiences. In existence for over 30 years, the MPA program is accredited by NASPAA, the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.

The MPA Program is designed to give students a strong background in public policy, research methods and public management to prepare them for work in federal, state, or local government and nonprofit organizations. A unique feature of our program is the mix of three-credit and one-credit courses that develop both a broader knowledge base and specific professional skills. The MPA program offers Concentrations in Local Government Management, Nonprofit Management and Community and Economic Development. A 15 credit hour Nonprofit Management Certificate and an 18 credit hour Urban and Economic Development Certification are also available.

The MPA faculty and staff are dedicated to helping MPA students with their educational and career endeavors. We offer small evening and Saturday classes, teamwork opportunities, and interesting research assignments. Course and career advising is an important part of my job as MPA Director. Our network of students and alumni support this process as well. We welcome inquiries about our program and public service opportunities. Our alumni have found responsible and challenging positions in many areas of public service in North Carolina and beyond.
