THEN...the nonprofit management certificate program at UNCG may be for you!

These are the features of this certificate program:

  • 15 credit hours of course work that can be completed within a year's time or longer, as your schedule allows
  • classes offered online and on campus
  • on-line, evening and Saturday courses
  • excellent faculty, many with experience in the nonprofit sector
  • small classes (15-25 students)
  • a mix of three-credit and one-credit courses, with some required and some elective
  • interesting and rigorous practical assignments

Curriculum (15 hours)

The curriculum should prepare all students to understand:

  • the nonprofit sector and its political and legal status;
  • methods of resource development and management;
  • specific knowledge and skills needed in nonprofit management.

Required Core Courses: (9 hours)

  • Nonprofit Management and Leadership (3 hrs.)*
  • Philanthropy and Resource Development (3 hrs.)*
  • Nonprofit Budgeting & Financial Management (3 hrs.)*

Choice: Three of these one-hour courses in the Topics in Public Affairs offerings (3 hours)

  • Marketing for Public and Nonprofit Agencies (1 hr.)*
  • Strategic Planning (1 hr.)*           
  • Grantwriting (1 hr.)*       
  • Nonprofit Law (1 hr.)
  • Volunteer Management (1 hr.)*

Electives:

  • Human Resource Development & Performance Management OR 3 one-hour courses OR a course in the MPA program offerings or another approved course in another graduate program

Students will also be required to develop a professional portfolio of their course projects and materials to demonstrate their proficiency in nonprofit work.

The required and recommended courses are offered in coordination with the nonprofit management concentration in the Master of Public Affairs program.

Non-Profit Management Certificate Handbook

Admission:

The following must be submitted to the Graduate School by July 1(fall semester); November 1 (spring), or April 1 (summer):

  • an application form (see the Graduate School website: http://grs.uncg.edu
  • a transcript (bachelor's and/or master's degree) from a regionally accredited college or university
  • personal statement 
  • three letters of recommendation
  • a resume

No test is required.

FINANCIAL AID: Loans are available for this Certificate program for eligible students enrolling in at least 3 hours of course work at the 500 level or above. (See Financial Aid)

Relationship to the MPA Program

This program allows students without an MPA degree who enroll in the certificate program to apply to the MPA program, and receive 12 hours of credit toward the degree. However, satisfactory completion of the certificate program does not guarantee admission to the MPA program. All other admission criteria, including transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation and a supplemental application would have to be completed by the applicant and reviewed by the faculty. Admitted students would have to complete the MPA degree within five years from the beginning of the certificate enrollment to the completion of the degree.

Disclosure statement: Twenty students completed the NPM certificate during the 2014-15 academic year within an average of 1.5 years. These graduates are employed in the following positions: Administrative support for a local university system; Representative for a veteran's nonprofit; Owner/Founder for a nonprofit dance studio; Match grant coordinator for a local nonprofit organization; Social Media Marketing Assistant for a Georgia corporation; Assistant Treasurer for a communications network; Minister of Spiritual Growth for a local church; Global Marketing assistant for a local corporation; Recruitment consultant for local job agency in Greensboro; Youth Missioner for local Episcopal Diocese; Executive Directore for a N.C. Science and Technology program; Property Manager for Section 8 Housing, Denver, Colorado; Foster Parent Recruiter, State of North Carolina; 2 MPA Students at State supported universities; PhD program in Gerontology at a Massachussets university; Administrative support at a local university and 1 unknown. The estimated cost of the program for 2014-2015 is $4548.53 for instate tuition and fees. Books, room and board are additional costs. Distance education classes have a significantly lower cost $3574.55
