Clinical Services

The AD/HD Clinic, which is a specialty service of the Psychology Clinic in the Department of Psychology, offers a full range of evidenced-based assessment and treatment services. Services are available for children as young as four years of age up through adults. All clinical services are provided by licensed psychologists and by advanced graduate students working under the supervision of licensed psychologists.

Assessment

Psychological evaluations are available to address a variety of referral questions, including:

  • Determining if AD/HD is present, and if so, which subtype
  • Evaluating for the presence of other learning, behavioral, and emotional problems that often accompany AD/HD
  • Ruling out Bipolar Disorder and other exclusionary conditions
  • Establishing an initial treatment plan
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of ongoing treatment
To address these questions, the AD/HD Clinic uses a comprehensive, state-of-the-art assessment approach, following the model outlined in Dr. Anastopoulos' text, Assessing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Anastopoulos & Shelton, 2001). This typically includes:

  • Computer-assisted diagnostic interviews and semi-structured background interviews with parents
  • Clinical interviews with children, adolescents, and self-referred adults
  • Parent and teacher-completed child behavior rating scales
  • Self-report rating scales completed by parents and by self-referred adults
  • Computer-assisted testing of AD/HD symptoms
  • Individually administered IQ and academic achievement testing
  • Clinic-based observations
  • Medical and school record reviews

Treatment

Evidenced-based treatments are used in combination to address the multiple needs of individuals with AD/HD. These research-supported treatment services include:

  • Parent training, delivered individually or in a multi-family group format
  • Family-based Problem Solving Communication Training program for adolescents and their parents
  • Medication consultation for children and adults
  • Social skills training groups for children
  • Individual, group, and family therapy for children and adults
  • School consultation

Fees

  • Clinical services are covered by some but not all insurance companies
  • Guilford County Medicaid accepted for child services
