The AD/HD Clinic offers a large number and variety of evidenced-based
psychological assessment and treatment services - that is,
assessment and treatment services that research has shown
to be effective. Our assessment services include: diagnostic
evaluations for AD/HD and various other psychiatric disorders,
intelligence testing, and screening for learning disabilities.
Our treatment services include parent training, social skills
training, and medication consultation, as well as individual,
group, and family-based interventions emphasizing cognitive
therapy, behavior therapy, and family systems strategies.
Our services are available for children as young as 4 years
of age up through adults.
No. Any parent or adult with an AD/HD referral concern may
call the AD/HD Clinic directly to make an appointment.
Appointments can be made by calling our administrative assistant
at the main AD/HD Clinic number (336-346-3192). When you call,
we will first gather basic demographic information about you
or your child. We will then schedule a telephone screening
with one of our intake staff. During this screening, which
takes about 20 minutes to complete, our intake staff will
collect more detailed information regarding your history and
current concerns. We will then send you packets of questionnaires:
for children, these are completed by parents and teachers;
for adults, the referred adult and significant others complete
these. Once all questionnaire packets have been returned,
we will contact you by phone either to schedule an appointment
or to let you know that you are on a waiting list for our
services.
Yes. We participate in network with the North Carolina State
Health Plan (Major Medical), the North Carolina Health Choice
program, and Medicaid. We also file claims with other insurance
providers, but the coverage for psychological services varies
from plan to plan and clients are ultimately responsible for
fees incurred for our services.
Yes. The comprehensive psychological evaluation approach that
we use allows us not only to diagnose AD/HD if appropriate,
but also to make diagnoses about other behavioral, emotional,
and learning disorders when indicated.
A comprehensive written report is prepared within two to four
weeks after an evaluation has been completed. Approximately
one to two weeks after that, a one-hour feedback appointment
is scheduled to review our diagnostic conclusions and treatment
recommendations. Treatment services are then provided to anyone
requesting such services from us.
For child and adult clients seen in the AD/HD Clinic, medication
consultation is available from a psychiatry fellow from Wake
Forest University. If deemed medically appropriate, a trial
of medication is conducted in order to determine if medication
is beneficial in the absence of significant side effects,
and if so, at what dosage. Once an optimal dosage has been
reached and the client has stabilized on this medication regimen,
the consulting psychiatrist then transfers responsibility
for ongoing medication management to the client's primary
care doctor or to another designated health care professional.
